ABSTRACT OF THE INVENTION A device for picking up animal excrement from the ground comprises first and second portions which each have raised edges and which are pivotable with a flap-like motion between an open position and a closed position in which they co-operate to define an excrement- receiving receptacle. The first and second portions scrape excrement off the ground in moving into the closed position of the receptacle. A handle is mounted on the first and second portions providing the receptacle and a pulling bar is accommodated within the handle and connected to the first and second portions between side limbs of the handle whereby a pulling force applied to the pulling bar by a finger of the hand holding the handle causes the first and second portions to pivot towards the closed position of the receptacle.
