A propulsion device for use in propelling a curling rock comprises a head which engages a rock so as to apply a pushing action from an elongate handle so that the player can stand while pushing the handle and applying the propelling force. On the rock is mounted a tubular member carried on the handle of the rock which has a surface for engaging a pair of arms on the propulsion head so that the tubular member is aligned at right angles to the line of propulsion. A loose cable extends from the head to a fastener on the tubular member at one end of the tubular member with the amount of force applied by the fastener before release being variable. Thus, as the rock leaves the head after the propulsion stroke, the loose cable tightens and applies a rotation force on the tubular member and therefore the handle up to a predetermined rotation torque depending upon the selection of the fastener element. Thus the rock is propelled with a variable propulsion force and a variable rotation rate both of which are selectable by the player.
