The characteristic feature of the present invention resides in that a protective ward of the cutting zone of a machine, which has on one of the sides of the cutting zone a shield with movable resilient members, incorporates at least one additional shield positioned in parallel with said main one. The resilient members of each shield axe defined by at least two slots passing through the central portion thereof, the slots and movable members of adjacent shields overlapping. The present invention can be used most advantageously in milling-and-sawing machines for processing logs to ob- tain technical chips and sawn timber.
