ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A device for providing a gas-tight connection between the hollow shaft of a rotatably mounted reaction drum and a stationary feed or return line. Achieving a gas-tight connection bdtween the hollow shaft of a rotatably mounted reaction drum and a stationary feed or return line has hitherto not only presented considerable difficulties but has also not as yet been satisfactorily accomplished. These difficulties are caused not only by the fact that the reaction drum is under positive or negative pressure, but mainly by the fact that when the said drum is in operation, the hollow shaft lifts axially and also radially off the stationary feed or return line, to a greater or lesser degree, and moves away from it. It is true that, in the case of ball/roller bearings, sealing devices are known for one-piece shafts which provide a more or less satisfactory gas-tight connection between the shaft mounting and the housing of a container. However, such sealing devices are not only of relatively complex design, but are also completely unsuitable for providing a gas-tight joint between the hollow shaft of a rotatably mounted reaction drum and a stationary feed or return line. According to the invention, however, a reliable and particularly effective gas-tight joint between the hollow shaft of a rotatably mounted reaction drum and a stationary feed or return line is obtained in a particularly simple manner, in that an annular disc is arranged at the joint, preferably at the hollow shaft, the said disc being enclosed by a cross sectionally U-shaped housing secured to the feed or return line; in that the said housing contains at least one sealing ring which is pressed against the said annular disc, the said sealing ring communicating with the said housing through bellows-like casings, spaced radially from each other; and in that lines for the supply of gaseous or liquid pressure media to the space enclosed by the bellows-like casings are connected to the housing. These arrangements according to the invention make it possible, very advantageously, to vary the pressure with which the sealing ring is applied to the annular disc in an optimal manner, i.e. not only completely independently of the pressure obtaining in the reaction drum, but also completely independently of the type of gaseous or liquid sealing medium supplied. This not only provides very advantageously a gas-tight connection, independent of any external factors, between the sealing ring and the housing, but also, and completely independently of any wear in the sealing ring, a safe and reliable gas-tight connection between the hollow shaft of the rotatably mounted reaction drum and the stationary feed or return line, if the said hollow shaft of the rotatably mounted reaction drum lifts, in relation to the stationary feed or return line, in the axial or radial direction, off the said feed or return line, or moves away from it.
