ABSTRACT In automatic letter handling, a device used for raising the flaps of fetters includes a sensing system that controls a compressed-air system. This sensing system is associated with a feed system, and between the feed and a device for wetting letter flaps there is an outlet port for the compressed air. The holding plate of the wetting device is so configured that, in con- junction with the compressed air port, the flaps of unsealed letters are caused to pass through the wetting device for subsequent sealing whereas already sealed letters pass entirely over the holding plate and clear of the wetting device. In this way both sealed and unsealed letters in any order can be processed.
