Optical communications networks include optical fibres (30) that subject the polarization of the light passing through the fibre and the polarization-dependent components (50) to vary over time. In order to optimize the optical information processing in the individual components of the optical network, it is essential to keep the polarization of the light, as well as its frequency and intensity, within narrowly defined limits. This is achieved in that light that is of the characteristic polarization of the polarization dependent components is sent to every component (50) of this sort. Even though numerous attempts have been made to do so, up to now it has not be possible to develop a simple polarization regulating device that can be manufactured in a cost-effective manner. According to the present invention, the polarization regulating device (10) comprises an input (20) to receive light with a polarization P e, and output (40) to decouple light with a predetermined polarization P a, an electrically controllable polarization adjustment device (60) to convert the light that is received that is of polarization P e into light with the predetermined polarization P a, a light-sensitive detector (90) that follows the analyzer (80), and a device (100) that supplies the control signals, this being connected electrically on the input side with the light-system detector (90) and on the output side with the polarization adjustment device (60).
