An apparatus (20) for delivering one or more aromas at selected times includes a housing (22) with a receptacle (36) and an aroma delivery device (38) detachably received in the receptacle (36). The aroma delivery device (38, 138) includes a carrier (40, 140) having a plurality of aroma-bearing elements (41, 141, 341, 441) that are selectively communicated with an air passageway (24) for providing one or more aromas as desired. The device (38, 138) is especially useful for providing a realistic sensory experience in an interactive or non-interactive use, and may be used in such diverse settings as the entertainment industry, the educational training field or a medical arena.
