ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE: A device for separating solid particles of dirt from cooling water for power stations and the like has a screening drum disposed in a cylindrical casing so as to form an annular chamber. An axially fitted dome is provided with a tangential inflow tube so that the incoming cooling water flows helically into the interior of the drum. An outflow tube is secured tangentially in the casing, a baffle plate being disposed in the annular chamber in front of the outflow tube orifice. Baffle plate bears by one edge coaxially against the outer surface of the drum and extends over part of the periphery of the latter, the distance from the drum increasing n the direction of flow. The baffle plate ensures uniform pressure distribution between the interior of the drum and the annular chamber over the entire periphery. To flush out the accumulated particles of dirt, a discharge tube is connected to the interior of the drum and is opened for a short period at specific intervals by means of a valve.
