The invention provides a grate comprising a plurality of parallel grate bars for removing over-size pieces from a bulk material. Each driven end of each grate bar is moved up and down between a maximum vertical position and a minimum vertical position such that each grate bar moves asynchronously with the adjacent grate bars. The up and down movement may be provided by an eccentric drive. The spacing of the grate bars and the agitating action of the walking grate may be varied to suit conditions. In operation, bulk material is deposited on top of the grate bars where the suitably sized material falls between the grate bars and the over-size pieces fall off the free ends of the grate bars in response to the slope of the grate bars and the up and down motion of the grate bars.
