DEVICE FOR SORTING OBJECTS Abstract of the Disclosure A device for sorting objects includes a plurality of substantially parallel and mutually transversely spaced conveyor belts on which the objects rest during their ad- vancement. A plurality of sorting assemblies is provided, each including a plurality of sorting rollers which can be lifted from their retracted positions in which they are out of contact with the objects into their extended po- sitions in which they alternate with the conveyor belts and extend to above the same to engage the objects from below. Rotation of the sorting rollers in one sense or the other will displace the objects to one of two lateral outputs of the respective sorting assembly, so that the sorting device distributes the objects to a number of out- puts which is twice the number of the sorting assemblies. The sorting assemblies can be arranged in succession as considered in the advancement direction of the objects, or at several levels, or both. All of the conveyor belts are driven by a single motor and a transmission. The plurality of conveyor belts may consist of several sets of such con- veyor belts, each of the sets being associated at least one of the sorting assemblies. The conveyor belts of each set are trained about respective input and output reversing rol- lers. Transition conveyor belts may be trained about the output reversing roller of a preceding, and about the input reversing roller of a succeeding, ones of successive sorting assemblies. The transition conveyor belt may also be used to transmit motion between the successive conveyor belt sets.
