The invention is directed to a device for stabilizing a paper web in an unwinding and splicing station. The splicing station includes a primary paper roll and a secondary paper roll. A suction box extends across a width of the paper web and includes a suction zone adjacent the paper web. The paper web unwinds from the secondary paper roll and passes the suction box. The suction zone extends substantially across the width of the paper web and is configured to effect a substantially uniform vacuum in its area, wherein the unwinding paper web runs evenly over the suction zone area.
