ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A device for storing radioactive material comprises an outer container closed by upper and lower covers and having a central region containing a nest of tightly packed containment structures. Each such structure comprises an inner, closed, metallic container for the radioactive material and a surrounding unitary ceramic protective sheath encompassing the inner container and formed from carbon, silicon carbide, aluminum oxide or a mixture thereof. A sheath comprising a plurality of structural elements surrounds the nest of tightly packed containment structures and is interposed between such nest and the outer container and is adapted to perform one or more of the functions comprising gamma radiation screening, neutron moderation and neutron absorption. This device is considerably less expensive than conventional containment devices and permits the use of ceramics having high corrosion resistance and mechanical hardness. -1-
