The invention relates to a device for stunning an animal for slaughter, for instance a pig which device comprises: transporting means (1) for transporting an animal for slaughter through the device; at least two head electrodes (3,4) for placing against the head of the animal; at least one body electrode (5,35) for placing against the head of the animal, first electrical means connected to the head electrodes for carrying through the brain of the animal a first current pulse; and second electrical means connected to the body electrode for carrying through the body of the animal a second current pulse. The device is characterized in that said first current pulse comprises an alternating current component with a first basic frequency f1 of at least 100 Hz; said second current pulse comprises an alternating current component with a second basic frequency f2 which is lower than f1 and which begins a maximum of 8 s after the start of the first current pulse, and during the contact between the electrodes and the animal for slaughter the relative velocity between the electrodes and the animal for slaughter is substantially zero.
On décrit un dispositif servant à étourdir un animal à l'abattoir, par exemple un porc, ce dispositif comprenant: des moyens (1) de transport à travers le dispositif d'un animal à l'abattoir; au moins deux électrodes (3, 4) de tête destinées à être placées contre la tête de l'animal; au moins une électrode (5, 35) de corps destinée à être placée contre le corps de l'animal; des premiers moyens électriques reliés aux électrodes de tête afin de transporter à travers le cerveau de l'animal une première impulsion de courant; ainsi que des seconds moyens électriques reliés à l'électrode de corps afin de transporter à travers le corps de l'animal une seconde impulsion de courant. Ce dispositif est caractérisé en ce que la première impulsion de courant comprend une composante de courant alternatif possédant une première fréquence fondamentale f¿1? d'au moins 100 Hz, en ce que la seconde impulsion de courant comprend une composante de courant alternatif possédant une seconde fréquence fondamentale f¿2? qui est inférieure à f¿1? et commence au maximum 8 secondes après le commencement de la première impulsion, et en ce que, lors du contact entre les électrodes et l'animal à l'abattoir, la vitesse relative entre les électrodes et l'animal est sensiblement nulle.
