ABSTRACT Lead particles in the exhaust gases of an internal combustion engine are agglomerated in packings of wire mesh or expanded metal which are contained in spaces defined within an elliptical section casing between the casing wall and a perforated pipe extending between inlet and outlet chambers which also have perforated walls at opposite ends of the casing. The intermediate pipe is spaced laterally from and parallel to the axes of the exhaust gas inlet and outlet pipes leading into the casing, which has external ribs to enhance cooling of the exhaust gases in the packing and thereby enhance particle agglomeration. - 1 -
