A device (10) designed for coating a material web (16) with a coating medium (14), comprising a coater (12), a metering/ smoothing device (18) positioned downstream of the of the coater (12) in direction of feed L of material web 16, at a certain distance from said coater, and a support roll (24) around which the material web (16) is guided. Moreover, the material web is guided around the support roll (24) only in the area of the metering/ smoothing device (18), and it traverses essentially in a straight line between the coater (12) and the support roll (24). In accordance to a first aspect of this invention, a support arrangement (26) is provided whose purpose is to support the material web (16) in the straight web section between the coater (12) and the support roll (24). In accordance to a second aspect of this invention, means are provided which stabilize the material web in the area where the web traverses in a straight line.
