ABSTRACT A device for displaying data in the manner of a page, for example, on a television monitor. The device comprises a foreground memory and a background memory. The foreground memory has a capacity of one page of text. The background memory comprises serial sub-memories. A number of these sub-memories is con- nected in parallel; each sub-memory then contains part of a character (word), so that together they contain the relevant character within a series of characters. The characters become serially available on the out- puts of the relevant sub-memories for transfer, if necessary, to the foreground memory. Said number of sub-memories can accommodate, for example, eight pages of text. The sub-memories may be constructed according to the magnetic bubble technique. Given data which cir- culate with the other data serve as a starting indication. The other pages can be addressed by means of difference data which indicate the distance in the series with respect to the starting data. Further, fixed data con- cerning the length of a page enable a page of text to be readily presented, after appearance on an output of the background memory, to the foreground memory. Each of said sub-memories preferably comprises a single loop so that intermediate control during the transfer of a page of data is very simple. The foreground memory is preferably organized as a random access memory. This memory can be addressed on the one hand in that the posi- tion of an address counter is each time increased by one unit. On the other hand, this memory can be addressed in that the line address and the character address on the display apparatus are supplied to an adding device in order to form an address in an adding fashion. The output of the memory has connected to it a counter which comprises sub-counting cycles having a length of one line on the display apparatus in order to form the lines to be displayed thereon.
