ABSTRACT: A record carrier is stationary during recor- ding or reading and is subject to a tape tension which is higher than that during the subsequent transport. These different tape tensions are obtained in that the tape- like record carrier is guided each time around a compen- sating roller of different weight in front of and behind the recording or read head, the braking device being ar- ranged between the light compensating roller and the re- cording or read head. During operation of the braking de- vice, the heavy compensating roller freely acts on the record carrier and the light compensating roller pulls the record carrier off the supply roll by forced dis- placement. When the braking device is not in operation, the heavy compensating roller is blocked and the light compensating roller freely acts on the record carrier and is hence returned to its starting position.
