Abstract of the Disclosure A device for the transverse cutting of webs of thermoplastic plastic and more particularly webs of tubular film for making bags, consists of a pair of feed rolls advancing the web in steps equal to the length to which the web is cut, a transverse cutting knife arranged in parallelism to a transverse welding device and two vertically moving rails arranged parallel to each other, of which the rail which is to the fore in the direction of feed is in the form of a gripping rail and grips the leaving web end, fed between the jaws of the transverse welding device, on a support and of which the rail placed between the kniofe and the gripping rail acing as a holding rail tautens the web section gripped between the pair of feed rolls and the gripping rail, before the knife severs the web. In order to produce a tension ensuring a good cut taking up and slack in the web, after the advance of the web (3) the pair of feed rolls (1 and 2) is subject to a movement retracting the web during a time intervall which comes before the formation of the transverse seam.
