A device (20) for use in laser induced interstitial thermotherapy includes a fiber (24) for coupling to a laser energy source, and emitting element (22) having a proximal end coupled to the fiber, a distal end for positioning adjacent the surface receiving the thermotherapy, and the element (22) radially emitting light (34) whose intensity is controllable along its longitudinal length achieving a power scattering function by the groove roughened surface (32).
