A device for debarking tree trunks 10 in a machine frame 1 has two rows 2 of rollers 3 which are inclined to the direction of advance (arrow 11). A tree trunk 10 is caused to turn around its lengthwise axis by these rotary driven rollers 3 and is advanced in doing so. For debarking purposes there is a shaping roller 20 which is located above the rollers 3 and is supported in a fork 22 which on the one hand can be swivelled about a first axis which is parallel to the direction of advance (arrow 11) and on the other hand can be swivelled about a second axis perpendicular to the direction of advance. This support of the shaping roller 20 allows it to adapt to curves, deformities, etc. of the tree trunk 10. Conversely, smaller irregularities such as branch stubs or root attachments are milled off when the tree trunk 10 is being debarked. Above the shaping roller 20 there can also be a protective sheet 50. On either side of the shaping roller 20 on the fork 22 which bears it there are adjustable supporting shoes 30 which engage the peripheral surface of the tree trunk 10, and their bottom is overlapped by the cutting teeth of the shaping roller 20 to the extent that the peripheral surface of the tree trunk 10 is to be removed when it is debarked.
