ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE In the manufacture of optical fibres these are coated as quickly as possible with a mechanical protection, suitably in the form of a coating of silicon rubber. The coating is provided by passing the fibre through a bath of coating mater- ial after drawing. As soon as the drawing rate exceeds a cer- tain limit the applied coating becomes uneven. This limit is substantially increased by placing a vibrating member, which is in contact with the bath surface, adjacent the point where the fibre passes into the bath.
