ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An emergency evacuation system is provided for evacuating persons from high-rise buildings. The system comprises a particularly configured guide column attached to the outside wall of a building and included a gear rack on one exposed edge thereof, and a carriage removably but slidably moun- ted on the guide column including a pinion gear meshable with the gear rack. A decent speed centrifugal governor associated with the pinion is also pro- vided for regulating the speed of fall of the device. This system provides a portable system which is easily usable by a person for emergency escape from high-rise buildings.
