The present invention is directed generally to devices and methods for controlling fluid flow in meso-scale fluidic components in a programmable manner. Specifically, the present invention is directed to an apparatus and method for placing two microfluidic components in fluid communication at an arbitrary position and time, both of which are externally defined. The inventive apparatus uses electromagnetic radiation to perforate a material layer having selected adsorptive properties. The perforation of the material layer allows the fluid communication between microfluidic components. Other aspects of this invention include an apparatus and method to perform volumetric quantitation of fluids, an apparatus to program arbitrary connections between a set of input capillaries and a set of output capillaries, and a method to transport fluid in centripetal device from a larger to a smaller radius. In addition, the present invention also is directed to a method to determine the radial and polar position of a pickup in the reference frame of a rotating device.
La présente invention concerne généralement des dispositifs et des procédés pour programmer la régulation d'un écoulement liquide dans des composants fluidiques à méso-échelle. Elle concerne en particulier un appareil et un procédé pouvant faire communiquer librement deux composants microfluidiques à une position et un temps arbitraires, tous deux délimités à l'extérieur. L'appareil de l'invention utilise le rayonnement électromagnétique pour perforer une couche de matériau possédant des propriétés d'adsorption déterminées. La perforation de la couche de matériau permet aux composants microfluidiques de communiquer librement. D'autres aspects de l'invention concernent un appareil et un procédé de quantification volumétrique de liquides; un appareil de programmation de jonctions arbitraires entre un ensemble de capillaires d'entrée et un ensemble de capillaires de sortie; et un procédé d'acheminement de liquide dans un dispositif centripète, d'un rayon plus grand à un rayon plus faible. L'invention concerne en outre un procédé qui permet de déterminer la position radiale et la position polaire d'un capteur dans le cadre de référence d'un dispositif rotatif.
