Disclosed is a pharmaceutical composition for preventing type I diabetes in a mammal susceptible to developing said diabetes, the composition comprising an effective amount of at least one compound of the formula I: (See Formula I) wherein R1, R2 and R3 are independently selected from the group consisting of H, an alkyl of from 1 to 8 carbon atoms, an alkyl-o-alkyl wherein each alkyl is from 2 to 8 carbon atoms, a haloalkyl of from 1 to 8 carbon atoms and 1 to 3 halogen atoms, an alkenyl of from 2 to 8 carbon atoms with one site of unsaturation, ketones of from 2 to 8 carbon atoms, aldehydes of from 1 to 8 carbon atoms, and one or more of R1, R2 and R3 are optionally hydroxy- substituted; and R4 is either H or -COR5, wherein R5 is an alkyl of from 1 to 5 carbon atoms; or a salt thereof; together with a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier.
