A diagnostic procedure for determining a double- stranded RNA (dsRNA) deficiency state in a patient's sample, quantifying this deficiency (if any), and therpeutically restoring any deficiency by the administration of exogenous dsRNA, optionally in combination with a lymphokine is provided. Patients with unresolved and indolent viral infections often have specific defects in vital intracellular dsRNA-dependent pathways which can be reversed or ameliorated at least in part by an exogeneously supplied dsRNA.
