Insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus and insulitis can be photodynamically diagnosed or photodynamically treated by administering a fluorescent photosensitive substance which is specifically incorporated by macrophages infiltrating into an inflammation site of the islet of a patient with insulin- dependent diabetes mellitus due to insulitis or an X ray-absorbing substance which is specifically incorporated by the macrophages as described above and absorbs X ray upon irradiation with X ray, then irradiating the part of the pancreas involving the macrophage infiltrating into the inflammation site due to insulitis with excitation light or X-ray, and observing the fluorescence or X ray absorption occurring at the inflammation site; or allowing the photosensitive substance or the X ray-absorbing substance to injure or disrupt the macrophages under irradiation with light or X ray at a sufficiently strong irradiation dose. Diagnostic compositions or therapeutic compositions appropriate for the above-described diagnosis or treatment are provided.
L'invention concerne un procédé permettant de diagnostiquer et de traiter de manière photodynamique le diabète sucré insulino-dépendant et l'insulite, qui comporte les étapes consistant à : administrer une matière photosensible fluorescente incorporée spécifiquement par des macrophages infiltrant un site d'inflammation d'îlots de Langerhans, dû à une insulite, d'un patient atteint de diabète sucré insulino-dépendant ; ou une matière absorbant les rayons X, spécifiquement incorporée par lesdits macrophages, et qui absorbe les rayons X lors d'une irradiation par rayons X ; irradier ensuite, à l'aide d'une lumière d'excitation ou de rayons X, la partie du pancréas contenant les macrophages infiltrant le site d'inflammation dû à l'insulite ; et observer la fluorescence ou l'absorption des rayons X produite au site d'inflammation ; ou permettre à la matière photosensible ou à la matière absorbant les rayons X de léser ou de dissocier les macrophages au moyen d'une dose suffisamment forte d'irradiation lumineuse ou de rayons X. L'invention concerne aussi des compositions diagnostiques ou thérapeutiques utiles dans le diagnostic ou le traitement décrits.
