A diagnostic marker comprising (a) a system for assaying, for example, an antibody and (b) a fluorescent functional group represented by general formula (I) which is bonded to this assay system, wherein R1 and R2 independently represent hydrogen, alkyl, etc.; R3 represents alkyl, alkyl sulfonate, etc.; X- represents, if required, an anionic species; and Y represents C1-10 alkylene optionally containing one or more atoms selected from among oxygen, nitrogen and sulfur. When irradiated with near or far infrared rays, the marker fluoresces a light of 780 nm or more in wavelength, which makes it useful in infrared endoscopy, the identification of the focus in a surgical operation, etc.
