ABSTRACT A method is described for diagnosing for the presence of a specific disease, a specific stage of a disease, or an allergy in a patient. Differentiated antigenic components of a larger protein or poly- saccharide group are supported in spaced relation on a solid-state substrate. At least a subset of the components is known to be reactive with antibodies present in serum obtained from a patient having the specific disease, a specific stage of a disease, or an allergy. Upon exposure to the patient's serum, antigen-antibody reactions on the substrate are detected for correspondence with a known pattern specific for the disease, the specific stage of the disease, or the allergy. Also described is a method for producing such a diagnostic antibody probe and the probe itself.
