ABSTRACT The members coated with the diamond according to the present invention are characterized by a supporting member having a layer of a solid solution on a surface of the supporting member, the solid solution composed of at least one member selected from the group consisting of a metal carbide, a metal nitride, and a metal carbonitride, a metal comprising at least two members selected from the group of the metals belonging to the groups IVA, VA, and VIA of the periodic table, and a layer of a diamond formed on a surface of the layer of the solid solution. The members coated with the diamond are extremely high in adhesion of the thin layer of the diamond to the supporting member and they can appropriately be applied to cutting tools, abrasive tools, and so on. Such superior members coated with the diamond can be prepared by heating the supporting member composed of a particular superhard alloy or the supporting member having a coating composed of a particular material coated on a surface of a general superhard alloy at temperature ranging from 1,000 ° C to 2,000° C at a particular pressure in an atmosphere of an inert gas. 1 0 0
