ABSTRACT OF DISCLOSURE. APPARATUS FOR SEPARATING A SELECTED MATERIAL WHICH FLUORESCES WITH A KNOWN DECAYTIME FROM A BATCH OF PARTICULATE MATERIAL IN WHICH A STREAM OF THE PARTICULATE MATERIAL IS IRRADIATED WITH PULSED ELECTROMAGNETIC RADIATION SUCH AS X-RAYS TO CAUSE THE SELECTED MATERIAL TO FLUORESCE. THE DECAY TIMES OF THE FLUORESCING MATERIALS ARE MEASURED AND THAT MATERIAL WITH A DECAY TIME EQUAL TO THE KNOWN DECAY TIME IS DETECTED AND REMOVED FROM THE STREAM.
