ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Dianhydrides, of particular utility in the production of polyimides are formed by reacting either phenolphthalein or bisphenol fluorenone with N-methyl-nitrophthalimide followed by hydrolysis and dehydration. The anhydrides have the formula Image where Z is a member selected from the class consisting of the Image group and the Image group.
