A diaper having an inner permeable fabric layer and an outer impermeable flexible sheet co- extensive with the inner layer and an absorption layer located in the crotch area between the inner layer and the outer sheet. Two absorption layers area each quilted layers of non-woven fabric and knit terry cloth. The crotch-defining margins of a first absorp- tion layer and the crotch-defining margins of the inner layer are merged and include a soft piping material. The second absorbent layer has edges connected to the margins of the impermeable sheet at the crotch-defining margins thereof.
