ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The present invention relates to a new type of diaphragm for use in electrolytic cells for the production of hydrogen and oxygen which consists essentially of fluorocarbon polymers which have been oxidized to improve their wettability. The present invention provides a new and improved diaphragm wherein the fluorocarbon polymers are present in the form of monofilaments, only the surface of the monofilaments is oxidized and the monofilaments are woven into a fabric. In the dry state, the gas permeability of the diaphragm is from 50 to 1000 1? dm -2 ? min -1 when the pressure differential is 200 Pa.
