A mechanical duty rubber diaphragm for use as a high speed dynamic seal is provided which overcomes the bending fatigue failure common to conventional rubber diaphragms. A comparatively thick rubber diaphragm of hollow conical shape is employed which has metal hoops bonded to outer and inner diameters. Upon the diaphragm being reciprocated along a central axis the hoops hold the rubber in true shear without bending and thus preclude the propagation of unavoidable minute cracks or discontinuities in the rubber into large tears, the common fatigue failure mode in rubber diaphragms.
