ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A process for the production of chlorine and an alkali metal hydroxide which comprises electrolysing an aqueous alkali metal chloride solution in a cell having an anode and a cathode separated by a diaphragm comprising zirconium oxide. A prefer- red diaphragm comprises zirconium oxide in fibrous form, and the zirconium oxide may also be combined with asbestos or fluorinated polymers.
