An improved soluble core for die casting metals or metal matrix composites is formed of a mixture of salt and about 0 to 20 weight % ceramic material blended together to produce a homogeneous mixture and compacted under pressure to produce a soluble core having little or no porosity. The ceramic material can be in the form of fibers, particulates, whiskers, and/or platelets, and has a melting temperature greater than that of the salt. The core can include a thermally insulating outer ceramic coating to enable the core to withstand higher die casting temperatures than conventional salt cores. The improved soluble core is removable with hot water and/or steam and the core material can be reclaimed for reuse. The process is used to form hollow articles.
Un noyau soluble amélioré destiné au coulage sous pression de métaux ou de composites à matrice métallique est constitué d'un mélange de sel et d'environ 0 à 20 % en poids d'un matériau céramique mélangés ensemble afin de produire un mélange homogène et compacté sous pression pour obtenir un noyau soluble présentant peu ou pas de porosité. Le matériau céramique peut se présenter sous la forme de fibres, de particules, de barbes et/ou de plaquettes, et il présente une température de fusion supérieure à celle du sel. Le noyau peut comporter un revêtement céramique extérieur thermo-isolant destiné à permettre audit noyau de supporter des températures de coulage sous pression supérieures à celles de noyaux de sels classiques. Le noyau soluble amélioré peut être extrait à l'aide d'eau chaude et/ou de vapeur chaude et le matériau du noyau peut être régénéré afin d'être réutilisé. On utilise le procédé pour former des articles creux.
