A latching mechanism positively holds top and bottom frame members of a die cutter together during a cutting process to prevent the two members from moving relative to each other during performance of a cutting procedure. The latching mechanism includes a latch tongue on the top member which is received in an opening in the bottom member, or vice versa. An extendable retractable latch pin is provided on the bottom member which may be extended trough an opening in the latch tongue to latch the die cutter closed. In one embodiment, positioning pins are provided at the corners of the top member which are received in locating holes in the bottom member to help prevent lateral movement of the top frame relative to the bottom frame during operation.
