ABSTRACT A device for relieving dielectric stress at a termination of a shielded and insulated cable (20) including a housing (12) that has an opening (22) for receiving the cable. The housing includes a generally cylindrical insula- tive layer (27) having an inner high voltage electrode (17) and an outer ground electrode (14). A tube (18) of insula- tive material surrounds an exposed portion of the insulation (28) of the cable (20) and fits into the opening (22) of the housing while contacting both the high voltage and ground electrodes. The housing (12) is characterized by the mouth of the opening (22) being substantially the same diameter as the remainder of the opening, The tube is characterized as consisting of nonrigid elastomeric material having a permittivity in a range from 10 to 25, having an outward extending ridge (32) on one end that exceeds the diameter of the mouth of the opening (22), and having a conductive nonrigid elastomeric tubular extension (17) integral with the other end of the tube (18) for forming a part of the high voltage electrode (16, 17). The conductive extension (17) has a lip (30) which extends inwardly for contacting an exposed portion of the high voltage conductor (26) of the cable (20) and a portion of the insulation (28) adjacent the exposed portion of the high voltage conductor (26) of the cable.
