Abstract A functional groups-containing diene polymer having a molecular weight of 1,100 to 110,000 is obtained by adding to a diene polymer functional groups A, B and c represented by formulas I, II and III, respectively, Image I Image or Image II wherein R1 and R2 each represents a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group having 1 to 10 carbon atoms; Image III wherein R1 and R2 each represents a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group having 1 to 10 carbon atoms. The diene polymer has a molecular weight of 1,000 to 50,000 and the molar ratio of functional group A/(functional groups B and C) is 40/60 to 0/100, with the total amount of functional groups A, B and C being 1 to 15 parts per 100 parts of diene monomer. Also included is a rubber composition comprising as essential components the functional groups-containing diene polymer and a diene-based rubber.
