A liquid fuel burner includes a shroud having a top and a bottom. There is an opening near the bottom. A mantle extends across the opening in the shroud. There is a liquid fuel injector within the shroud near the top. An air inlet extends into the shroud near the top. A fuel/air mixture expelled through the mantle is ignited exterior to the mantle. This heats the shroud and the fuel/air mixture within the shroud prior to combustion.
