ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A diesel engine having a subchamber in the cylinder head in which the exhaust gas recirculating (EGR) passageway is coupled to the subchamber with a valve means controlled in synchronism with the rotation of the engine so that only the minimum necessary amount of EGR gas is present exclusively in the subchamber at the beginning stage of engine combustion in order to decrease the generation of NOx products while maintain- ing good combustion.
