IMPROVED DIFFERENTIAL CLUTCH PULSING SYSTEM ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A standby control unit is described for use in a drive system having two synchronous motors driving a common load through air operated clutches where the load is balanced or divided between the two motors by differentially pulsing the clutches. A control unit is responsive to the measured load on each motor and provides pulses which momentarily reduce the voltage to electrically controlled valves which control the air supply to respective clutches. By making slightly longer the pulse for the control of the clutch in the motor drive having the greater load, the load unbalance is reduced. In the event of a failure in the control unit, the standby control is automatically connected to the electrically controlled valves. It has a voltage source which provides a voltage to each valve to keep the respective clutch in a non-slipping state. The standby control includes a capacitor for each valve. The capacitors for each valve can be simultaneously switched into the circuit, momentarily reducing the voltage to the respective valve as the capacitor begins to charge thus permitting the clutch to slip. As the capacitor charges, the voltage at the valve returns to normal and the clutch to its non-slipping state. An adjustable resistance in the charging circuit for the capacitor can provide a differential in the pulse of reduced voltage to each valve by making the charging rate slightly different.
