A device and method for accurately measuring small distances using gas flow sensing. The device has both a measurement and a reference gaging conduit, each including a hot-wire anemometer. The differential sensing achieved by use of the reference filters out changes in the gas property. The matched physical configuration of the reference and the measurement gas flow paths miminizes sensitivity of the system to acoustic disturbances. High-mass high thermal conductivity support needles significantly improve the response time for the hot-wires. A sintered metal diffuser in the gas flow path reduces the noise originating in the gas supply.

Dispositif et procédé permettant de mesurer avec précision des petites distances par détection d'un débit gazeux. Le dispositif comprend un conduit de mesure et un conduit de calibrage de référence, chaque conduit comportant un anémomètre à fil chaud. La détection différentielle, réalisée grâce à l'utilisation du système de référence, élimine les modifications des propriétés du gaz. La configuration physique associant le conduit de référence et le conduit d'écoulement du gaz de mesure minimise la sensibilité du système aux perturbations acoustiques. Des aiguilles supports, ayant une conductivité thermique et une masse élevées, améliorent de manière significative le temps de réponse des fils chauds. Un diffuseur en métal fritté, disposé dans le conduit d'écoulement du gaz, réduit le bruit produit par l'alimentation en gaz.
