A differential power transmission device for a tape recorder includes a pulley gear, a connecting gear, and a driven gear mounted on a main base for rotation about respective axes. The connecting gear engages the driven gear, and is axially movable for selectively engaging and disengaging the pulley gear. A pivot member axially moves the connecting gear so as to selectively engage the connecting gear with the pulley gear, so that the driven gear is driven by the rotation force of the pulley gear transmitted via the connecting gear. The pivot member is arranged to pivotally move by movement of asupport plate, and includes at least one extension member that reciprocates substantially perpendicular to the main base in response to pivoting of the pivot member, so as to impart axial movement to the connecting gear to cause the same to selectively engage or separate from the pulley gear.
