A diffraction grating of reflective or transmissive lines formed by a regular matrix of pixels each containing a respective curvilinear portion of one or more of said lines, which pixels when illuminated each generate a two-dimensional optical catastrophe image diffraction pattern whereby the total image diffraction pattern of the grating is optically variable but structurally stable. The invention further provides a diffraction grating of reflective or transmissive lines, comprising a multiplicity of diffraction grating regions, which are at least partly separated by a multiplicity of grating free regions, each grating free region having a dimension which is at least large enough to be resolved by the human eye, the total grating free areas not exceeding about 20 to 50% of the total area of the grating.
Réseau de diffraction de lignes à réflexion et à transmission formé par une matrice régulière de pixels contenant chacun une partie curviligne d'une ou de plusieurs desdites lignes. Lorsqu'ils sont illuminés, ces pixels produisent chacun une image diffractionnelle de catastrophe optique à deux dimensions, l'image diffractionnelle totale du réseau étant optiquement variable mais structuralement stable. En outre, l'invention produit un réseau de diffraction de lignes à réflexion et à transmission, comprenant une multiplicité de régions du réseau de diffraction, qui sont au moins partiellement séparées par une des régions libres du réseau. Chaque région libre comporte une dimension qui est au moins assez grande pour être résolue par l'oeil humain, et l'ensemble des aires libres du réseau ne dépasse pas environ 20 à 50 % de l'aire totale du réseau.
