A diffuse reflectance probe (20) is disclosed which employs in an exemplary embodiment, fiberoptic light transmitting elements (36) from illuminating light source (22) to send rays (24) onto the sample (28) and a light pipe (50) for collecting light to send to the detector (32). The fiberoptic light transmitting elements (36) surround the light pipe (50) and a window (26) having a beveled surface (64) communicates with the light transmitting fiberoptics (36) to direct the illuminating radiation (24) in a relatively large field of view in a close working distance with the probe (20).
