A digital audio broadcasting system that is capable of providing a large number of high quality stereophonic channels (stereo channels 1 to 33) to mobile receivers in an environment with severe multipath delay (80-I, 80-N) and fading. Intersymbol interference degradations caused by multipath delay (80-I; 80-N) are mitigated via an adaptive equalizer (21) in the receiver. The use of a dynamic single channel per carrier system preserves the simplicity inherent in the single channel per carrier assignment while it incorporates the ability to address frequency-selective fading by providing substantial frequency diversity. Frequency di- versity is achieved via a slow frequency hop implementation in which the assignment of a number of stereo channels to an equal number of carrier frequencies is changed periodically. In this manner, each of many independent stereo channels (stereo chan- nels 1 to 33) achieve the frequency diversity associated with a wide bandwidth by hopping among an equal number of carriers that fully occupy the bandwith. This diversify is achieved without any bandwidth expansion of the group of stereo channels rela- tive to fixed single channel per carrier assignment.
