A digital broadcast receiver and a stream processing method for a digital broadcast receiver are provided. The digital broadcast receiver comprises a tuner for receiving a stream from a digital broadcast transmitter, a demodulator for demodulating the stream and an equalizer for equalizing the demodulated stream. The stream comprises an initialization byte which is used to initialize a Trellis encoding unit having a number of Trellis encoders included in the digital broadcast transmitter. Initial 4-bits of the initialization byte are input to one of the Trellis encoders to be used for the initialization, and the other 4-bits are used to construct known data.
