A B S T R A C T The specification describes a new digital compandor which possesses a nonlinear companding characteristic and which is capable of making the conversion between linear and nonlinear code signals without the use of large capacity read-only memories (ROM). The new compandor receives a linear code signal consisting of polarity bits representative of the polar- ity of a sample value of an original analog signal and a plurality of absolute value bits representative of the absolute value of the sample via a plurality of input terminals. A first ROM is addressed by a first bit group. The ROM memorizes a segment bit decision rule for use in determining segment bits based on this first bit group. A second ROM is addressed by a second bit group which includes some bits in common from the first bit group. The second ROM memorizes a first mantissa bit decision rule for use in determining mantissa bits based on the second bit group. A third ROM is addressed by the first bit group and memorizes a second mantissa bit decision rule for deter- mining mantissa bits based on the first bit group. Depending upon the value of the most significant bit among the segment bits supplied by the first ROM, an additional chip selector selects the second or third ROM means. The original linear code signal is thereby converted into a nonlinear code signal which consists of a polarity bit, a plurality of segment bits that represent the segment to which the sample value of the original analog signal belongs and mantissa bits that indicate the position of the sample bit in the segment.
