The invention relates to a method for the digital decoding of composite video signals (CVBS), comprising a brightness signal (luminance component Y) and two colour difference signals (chrominance components U, V), which modulate a colour subcarrier according to the quadrature amplitude modulation principle, in which a plurality (N) of sample values of the video signal are transformed by means of a Walsh - Hadamard transformation (WHT) from the pixel domain into the WHT domain, the colour difference signals (U, V) are derived as specific WHT coefficients of the WHT matrix obtained, the WHT coefficients determining the colour difference signals (U, V) are subtracted from the WHT matrix, the WHT matrix is transformed back into the pixel domain by means of an inverse Walsh - Hadamard transformation (IWHT) and the brightness signal (Y) is derived from the IWHT result. a digital decoder for composite video signals (CVBS) with a transformation means for performing a Walsh - Hadamard transformation (WHT) with the sample values of the video signal, a setting means for setting the WHT coefficients of the resulting WHT matrix and for deriving specific WHT coefficients as colour difference signals (Uf V) and an inverse transformation means.
